How to Use WeChat Mini-Programs for Bikes, Transit, and Attractions

Last updated: 2026-04-30

WeChat mini-programs are lightweight apps that run inside WeChat — no separate download, no new account. For tourists, they unlock three things that would otherwise require separate apps: bike-sharing, transit QR codes, and attraction ticket booking. If you have

How to Open a Mini-Program

Tap the search icon at the top of the WeChat home screen and type the mini-program name. Tap the result with the small grid icon (that's the mini-program indicator). The mini-program opens inside WeChat. You can also access recently used mini-programs by pulling down on the WeChat home screen.

Bike-Sharing: Meituan Bike and Hello Bike

China's cities are covered by dockless bike-sharing. The two main networks are Meituan Bike (yellow) and Hello Bike (blue/white). Both have WeChat mini-programs.

  1. 1. Search for the bike mini-program

In WeChat search, type 'Meituan Bike' (美团单车) or 'Hello Bike' (哈啰单车). Open the mini-program.

  2. 2. Allow location access

The mini-program asks for location permission. Allow it — this shows nearby available bikes on a map.

  3. 3. Scan the bike's QR code

Find a bike nearby. Tap Scan in the mini-program and scan the QR code on the bike's lock or frame. The lock releases automatically.

  4. 4. Ride and end the trip

Ride to your destination. Lock the bike manually at a designated parking area (marked on the map). The mini-program detects the lock and ends your trip. Payment is deducted from your WeChat Pay balance automatically.

Typical cost: ¥1.5–2.5 per 30 minutes. Bikes are everywhere in major cities — a fast, cheap way to cover the last mile from a metro station.

Park bikes in the designated zones marked on the map (usually outlined in green). Parking outside these zones triggers a penalty fee of ¥5–20. The map shows exactly where you can end your ride.

Transit QR Codes

Some cities offer transit QR codes through WeChat mini-programs rather than the Alipay Transport section. Search for your city name + "metro" or "transit" in WeChat search. The process is the same as Alipay: activate once per city, then scan at turnstiles.

Attraction Tickets

Many popular attractions sell tickets through WeChat mini-programs — often cheaper than third-party booking sites and with shorter queues at the gate.

  1. 1. Search the attraction name

In WeChat search, type the attraction name in English or Chinese. Look for the official mini-program (usually has the attraction's logo).

  2. 2. Select date and ticket type

Choose your visit date and ticket type (adult, student, etc.). Some attractions require a specific entry time slot — book the slot you want.

  3. 3. Enter passport details

Most attractions require your passport number for ticket registration. Enter it accurately — it's checked at the gate.

  4. 4. Pay and save the QR code

Pay with WeChat Pay. A QR code ticket appears in the mini-program. Screenshot it as backup — you'll scan it at the entrance gate.

Popular attractions with WeChat mini-program booking: the Palace Museum (Forbidden City), West Lake scenic area, Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, and most major national parks.

Practical Tips

  • Recent mini-programs: Pull down on the WeChat home screen to see your recently used mini-programs — faster than searching each time.
  • Favorites: Long-press a mini-program icon → Add to My Mini Programs to pin it for quick access.
  • No internet needed for bike unlock: The bike QR code scan works offline once the mini-program has loaded.
