Why Use Trip.com Instead of 12306
The official 12306 app is primarily in Chinese and requires a multi-step passport verification process. Trip.com handles the 12306 booking on your behalf, presenting everything in English. The trade-off: Trip.com charges a small service fee (typically ¥5–15 per ticket) on top of the official price.
If you're booking just one or two train journeys, Trip.com's convenience is worth the small service fee. If you're taking many trains, it may be worth setting up 12306 directly to save on fees.
Searching for Trains
1. Open Trip.com and go to 'Trains'
Open the Trip.com app or visit trip.com. Tap 'Trains' from the main menu. Select 'One Way' or 'Round Trip'.
2. Enter your route and date
Type your departure city and destination in English. Trip.com recognizes all major Chinese cities in English. Select your travel date. Tap Search.
3. Browse results
Results show all available trains sorted by departure time. Each listing shows the train number, departure and arrival times, duration, and available seat classes with prices. The Trip.com price includes the service fee.
Booking Your Ticket
1. Select a train and seat class
Tap the train you want. Choose your seat class — Second Class is the standard comfortable option, First Class has more space. Tap 'Book' next to your chosen class.
2. Enter passenger details
Add a passenger. Select 'Passport' as the ID type. Enter your passport number, full name as it appears on your passport, date of birth, and nationality. Enter your phone number for booking confirmation.
3. Review and pay
Review the booking summary including the total price with service fee. Pay with your Visa, Mastercard, or other international card. Trip.com accepts most major international cards without issues.
4. Receive your e-ticket
After payment, your e-ticket appears in 'My Trips' in the app. The ticket shows your train number, carriage, and seat number. At the station, your passport is your ticket — no printing needed.
At the Station
Your passport is your ticket at every checkpoint. Show it at security, at the platform gate, and when boarding. The gate reader scans your passport and matches it to your booking automatically.
Trip.com sends your booking to 12306 on your behalf. Your ticket is a real 12306 ticket — it works exactly the same way at the station as if you'd booked directly.
Practical Tips
- Seat selection: Trip.com allows seat selection on most trains — choose a window seat (A or F) for scenic routes.
- Changes and refunds: You can cancel or change tickets through Trip.com. The same China Railway fee structure applies (see the cancellation guide), plus Trip.com's service fee is non-refundable.
- English support: Trip.com has 24/7 English customer support by phone and chat — useful if you have issues at the station.
- Group bookings: You can book tickets for multiple passengers in one transaction on Trip.com, which is easier than 12306 for groups.
- Sold-out trains: Trip.com shows the same availability as 12306. If a train is sold out on Trip.com, it's sold out everywhere.
