How to Buy and Activate an eSIM for China with Airalo

Last updated: 2026-04-30

Airalo (eSIM)
View Guide → is the easiest way to get mobile data for China before you leave home. You buy a digital SIM (eSIM) through the app, install it on your phone, and activate it when you land. No physical SIM card, no hunting for a phone shop at the airport, no language barrier.

Before You Start: Check eSIM Compatibility

Not all phones support eSIM. Check before purchasing:

  • iPhone: XS and later support eSIM (XR, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 series)
  • Android: Most flagship phones from 2020 onward support eSIM — check your phone's settings under "SIM cards" or "Mobile network"
  • Carrier lock: Some phones are carrier-locked and can't use eSIMs from other providers. If you bought your phone on a carrier contract, check with your carrier first.

Buy and install the eSIM before you board your flight. Once you're in China, you may not have reliable internet to complete the installation. The eSIM itself doesn't activate until you turn it on — you can install it at home and activate it on arrival.

Buying an eSIM on Airalo

  1. 1. Download Airalo and create an account

Search 'Airalo' in the App Store or Google Play. Create an account with your email address. You'll need an account to manage your eSIMs.

  2. 2. Search for China eSIMs

Tap the search bar and type 'China'. You'll see eSIM options from multiple providers. Each listing shows the data amount, validity period, and price. Airalo sells eSIMs from several network partners — they all work in mainland China.

  3. 3. Choose a data plan

Select a plan based on your trip length and data needs. A 7-day 3GB plan is sufficient for most tourists. Tap a plan to see the full details including which networks it uses and coverage areas.

  4. 4. Purchase the eSIM

Tap Buy Now. Enter your payment details (credit/debit card or PayPal). Confirm the purchase. The eSIM appears in your Airalo account under My eSIMs.

  5. 5. Install the eSIM on your phone

Tap the eSIM in your Airalo account and tap Install. Follow the on-screen instructions — you'll scan a QR code or tap a direct install link. Your phone will add the eSIM as a second SIM. This takes about 2 minutes.

Activating Your eSIM in China

  1. 1. Turn on the eSIM when you land

Go to your phone's Settings → SIM cards (or Cellular/Mobile Data). Find the Airalo eSIM and turn it on. Set it as your data SIM.

  2. 2. Disable your home SIM for data

To avoid roaming charges on your home SIM, turn off data roaming for your home SIM. Keep it active for calls and SMS if needed, but route all data through the Airalo eSIM.

  3. 3. Test your connection

Open a browser and load a page. If it works, you're connected. If not, check that the eSIM is set as the active data SIM in your settings.

China eSIMs from Airalo route your traffic through foreign networks, which means apps like Google, Instagram, and WhatsApp work without a VPN. This is one of the main advantages over a local Chinese SIM card.

Practical Tips

  • Buy in advance: Airalo eSIMs can be purchased up to 30 days before your trip. Buy it at home where you have reliable internet.
  • Data top-up: If you run out of data, you can buy another eSIM in the Airalo app. You can have multiple eSIMs installed on your phone.
  • Keep your home SIM: Your home SIM stays in your phone alongside the eSIM. You can switch between them for calls and data.
  • Validity period: The validity period starts when you first activate the eSIM, not when you buy it. A 7-day plan gives you 7 days from first use.
  • Coverage: Airalo's China eSIMs work in major cities and tourist areas. Coverage in very remote areas may be limited.
