Airalo (eSIM)

Why You Need It

China blocks Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Gmail, and most Western apps. A VPN solves this, but VPN apps must be installed and configured before arrival, and performance is inconsistent. An Airalo eSIM routes your traffic through a foreign carrier, which means Western apps work automatically — no VPN required. You activate it before your flight and arrive with full internet access from the moment you turn on your phone at the airport.

Installation

1. 1. Check eSIM compatibility

   Make sure your phone supports eSIM. Most iPhones from XS onwards, and most flagship Android phones from 2020+, support eSIM. Check Settings → About on Android or Settings → Mobile Data on iPhone.

2. 2. Download the Airalo app

   Search 'Airalo' in the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) and install it. Create a free account with your email.

3. 3. Buy a China data plan

   In the app, search 'China'. Browse plans by data size and duration — 5 GB for 30 days is suitable for most 1–2 week trips. Plans start from around $4 USD. Pay with Visa, Mastercard, or PayPal.

4. 4. Install the eSIM

   After purchase, tap 'Install' in the app and follow the prompts. On iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM. The process takes about 2 minutes on a stable Wi-Fi connection.

5. 5. Set the eSIM as data (not calls)

   Keep your home SIM for calls and SMS. Set the Airalo eSIM as your data line only: Settings → Mobile Data → select Airalo plan for data.

6. 6. Enable data roaming on arrival

   Once you land in China, turn on data roaming for the Airalo eSIM line. It connects to China Mobile or China Unicom automatically.

Usage Tips

• Western apps work immediately: Google Maps, WhatsApp, Gmail, Instagram, and YouTube all work without a VPN on Airalo data. Switch to your Airalo line if any app doesn't load.
• Share with travel companions: Turn on your phone's hotspot to share the Airalo connection with others — useful so not everyone needs to buy their own eSIM. Data consumption increases quickly when sharing.
• Save hotel Wi-Fi for heavy use: Stream, download, and do large uploads on hotel Wi-Fi. Use Airalo data for maps, messages, and quick searches.
• City coverage is strong: Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Xi'an, and other major cities have excellent coverage. Rural areas and long train rides can have gaps.
• Keep your home SIM active: Airalo is data-only — no phone number for calls or SMS. Your home SIM handles calls, WhatsApp voice, and your bank's OTP codes.
• Top up inside the app: If you run low on data, buy a new plan in the Airalo app — works from anywhere, including inside China.

Troubleshooting

eSIM not connecting in China? Make sure Data Roaming is turned ON for the Airalo line in your phone settings. It's off by default and must be enabled manually after arrival.

Western apps still not loading? Confirm your phone is using the Airalo eSIM for data (not your home SIM). Go to Settings → Mobile Data and check which line is active for data.

Hotspot not working? Some plans restrict tethering. Check the Airalo app — the plan details list whether hotspot is included.

Running out of data faster than expected? Background app refresh and video autoplay consume data silently. Turn off background refresh for apps you're not actively using, and disable video autoplay in social media settings.
