How to Use an Airalo eSIM to Access Blocked Apps Without a VPN
Last updated: 2026-04-30
China's Great Firewall blocks Google, Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube, and most Western apps. The standard solution is a VPN, but there's a simpler alternative: an eSIM from ![]()
How eSIM Bypasses the Firewall
When you use a local Chinese SIM card, your data travels through Chinese networks and is subject to the Great Firewall. When you use an Airalo eSIM, your data is routed through the eSIM provider's foreign network — typically based in Hong Kong, Singapore, or another country. From China's perspective, your traffic looks like it's coming from outside the country, so firewall restrictions don't apply.
This works because the eSIM uses a foreign carrier's network infrastructure, not China's domestic networks. It's technically different from a VPN — you're not encrypting traffic through a tunnel, you're simply using a network that isn't subject to Chinese filtering.
What Works and What Doesn't
Works with an Airalo eSIM:
- Google Search, Maps, Gmail, Google Translate
- Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger
- YouTube, Netflix (depending on your subscription region)
- Most Western apps and websites
Doesn't work (requires local network or separate solution):
- Chinese apps that require a Chinese phone number for verification
- Some banking apps that detect foreign networks
- WeChat and Alipay work fine — they don't require Chinese network access
The eSIM bypass works for data. If you make calls or send SMS through your home SIM, those go through your home carrier's roaming agreement and are not affected by the firewall. Keep your home SIM active for calls if needed.
Setting Up for Firewall Bypass
1. Install the Airalo eSIM before arriving in China
Buy and install the eSIM at home. See the guide on buying an Airalo eSIM for the full installation steps. The eSIM needs to be installed before you arrive — you can't install it reliably once you're in China without internet.
2. Activate the eSIM when you land
Go to Settings → SIM cards. Turn on the Airalo eSIM and set it as your data SIM. Turn off data roaming on your home SIM to avoid charges.
3. Test that blocked apps work
Open Google Maps or Instagram. If they load, the eSIM is routing your traffic correctly. If they don't load, check that the Airalo eSIM is set as the active data SIM (not your home SIM).
4. Keep your home SIM for calls
Your home SIM can stay active for calls and SMS. Only data needs to go through the Airalo eSIM. In your phone settings, set the Airalo eSIM as the default data SIM but keep your home SIM for voice.
eSIM vs VPN: Which Should You Use?
| eSIM | VPN | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Before trip | Before trip |
| Reliability | Very high | Variable (some VPNs blocked) |
| Speed | Full network speed | Slightly slower |
| Cost | ¥50–200 for trip | ¥50–200/year |
| Works on hotel Wi-Fi | No (data only) | Yes |
| Works on Chinese SIM | No | Yes |
The best approach for most tourists: use an eSIM for your phone's data, and also have a VPN installed for hotel Wi-Fi and situations where you need to use a local Chinese SIM.
Practical Tips
- Hotel Wi-Fi: The eSIM bypass only works for cellular data. On hotel Wi-Fi, you'll still need a VPN to access blocked apps.
- Data usage: Streaming video uses a lot of data. If you plan to use YouTube or Netflix, get a larger data plan (5GB+).
- Switching between SIMs: You can switch between your Airalo eSIM and home SIM in Settings. Use the Airalo eSIM for data, your home SIM for calls.
- Battery: Using cellular data instead of Wi-Fi uses more battery. Carry a power bank.
