How to Choose the Right China Data Plan on Airalo

Last updated: 2026-04-30

Airalo (eSIM)
View Guide → offers multiple China eSIM plans from different network providers. Choosing the right one depends on your trip length, how much you'll use your phone, and whether you need the eSIM to bypass the firewall. This guide helps you pick the right plan without overpaying or running short.

Understanding the Plan Options

Airalo sells China eSIMs from several providers. Each listing shows:

  • Data amount: Total data included (e.g. 1GB, 3GB, 5GB, 10GB)
  • Validity period: How many days the plan is active after first use
  • Price: In USD
  • Network: Which carrier's network it uses (affects coverage and speed)

Plans range from small (1GB/7 days) to large (20GB/30 days). The price per GB generally decreases with larger plans.

How Much Data Do You Need?

Estimate your daily usage based on what you'll do:

ActivityApproximate data use
Maps and navigation (Amap)50–100 MB/day
Messaging (WhatsApp, WeChat)20–50 MB/day
Social media browsing100–300 MB/day
Google Translate camera10–30 MB/day
Video calls (30 min)200–400 MB
YouTube/streaming (1 hour)500 MB–1.5 GB

Typical tourist usage (no streaming): 200–500 MB/day

For a 7-day trip with moderate use (maps, messaging, social media, no streaming): 3GB is usually sufficient.

For a 14-day trip or heavy use (video calls, streaming): 5–10GB.

Download offline maps in Amap before your trip — this dramatically reduces daily data usage for navigation. A downloaded city map uses about 200MB of storage but saves you 50–100MB of data per day.

Choosing the Right Validity Period

The validity period starts when you first activate the eSIM (turn it on), not when you buy it. Match the validity to your trip length:

  • 7-day plan: Good for trips up to 7 days. Buy it a few days before departure — it won't start until you activate it in China.
  • 15-day plan: Good for 1–2 week trips with some buffer.
  • 30-day plan: Good for longer trips or if you want flexibility. Often better value per GB.

If you run out of data before your plan expires, you can buy another eSIM in the Airalo app. You can have multiple eSIMs installed on your phone and switch between them.

Comparing Network Providers

Airalo's China eSIMs use different underlying networks. The key difference:

  • Hong Kong-based networks (e.g. China Mobile HK, CMHK): Route traffic through Hong Kong, which means Google and other blocked apps work without a VPN. Good coverage in major cities.
  • Mainland China networks: May have better rural coverage but traffic goes through Chinese infrastructure — blocked apps may not work.

When browsing Airalo, look for plans that mention "Hong Kong" or "HK" in the network description if bypassing the firewall is important to you.

Short city trip (3–5 days, major cities):

  • 3GB / 7 days — sufficient for maps, messaging, and light social media

Standard tourist trip (7–10 days):

  • 5GB / 15 days — comfortable buffer for moderate use

Extended trip or heavy user (14+ days or streaming):

  • 10GB / 30 days — best value per GB, handles streaming

Budget option:

  • 1GB / 7 days — works if you use hotel Wi-Fi for most things and only need cellular for maps and messaging

Practical Tips

  • Buy before you fly: Purchase and install the eSIM at home. You can't reliably install it once you're in China.
  • Check the network: Read the plan description carefully. Look for which carrier network it uses and whether it routes through Hong Kong.
  • Top-up option: If you run out, buy another plan in the app. You don't need to buy a large plan upfront — start with 3GB and add more if needed.
  • Compare prices: Airalo shows multiple providers for China. The cheapest isn't always the best — check reviews and network details.
  • Validity starts on activation: Don't activate the eSIM until you land in China. The clock starts when you turn it on.
