How to Link an International Card to Alipay

Alipay works for foreign tourists, but only after you link a card and verify your identity with your passport. This is the setup step that unlocks everything else — paying in shops, riding the metro, ordering food. Do it at home, not at the airport. The process takes about 10 minutes on a good connection, and a few things can trip you up if you're not prepared.

What Cards Are Accepted

Alipay supports Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, and Diners Club. American Express is not currently supported. Virtual cards and most prepaid cards are rejected — you need a physical card with international online transactions enabled.

To avoid foreign transaction fees on top of Alipay's own charges, use a card that waives international fees (e.g. Charles Schwab, Revolut, Wise, Capital One Venture, Chase Sapphire).

Linking Your Card

1. 1. Download the correct Alipay app

   Search 'Alipay' in the App Store or Google Play. You want the main blue icon published by 'Alipay (Hangzhou) Technology Co., Ltd.' — not Alipay HK, not TourPass.

2. 2. Register with your phone number

   Tap Sign Up and enter your international phone number with country code. You'll receive an SMS verification code — make sure your phone can receive SMS at this point. Do this before you travel to China.

3. 3. Go to Me → Bank Cards

   Tap the Me icon at the bottom right of the screen, then Bank Cards, then the + icon at the top right.

4. 4. Enter your card details

   Tap Add Card, select your card type (Visa or Mastercard), and enter your card number. The app will ask for expiry date, CVV, and the cardholder name exactly as it appears on the card.

5. 5. Complete passport identity verification

   Alipay will prompt you to verify your identity. Upload a clear photo of your passport information page, then complete a face scan (blink or turn your head as instructed). Verification is usually instant but can take up to 24 hours.

6. 6. Confirm with SMS from your bank

   Your bank will send an OTP to your phone number. Enter it in Alipay to authorize the card linking. If your bank doesn't send the OTP, call them to confirm international online transactions are enabled on your card.

Call Your Bank Before You Travel

This step prevents the single most common problem: your bank blocking the first Alipay payment as suspected fraud. Call your bank's international line, tell them you're traveling to China and will be using Alipay, and ask them to:

• Enable international online transactions on your card
• Whitelist transactions from Alipay in China

A two-minute call prevents a very frustrating moment at the checkout.

Fees to Know

• Under ¥200/day in Alipay transactions: no fee from Alipay
• Over ¥200/day: Alipay charges approximately 3% on the amount above ¥200
• Your bank's foreign transaction fee: 0–3% depending on your card
• TourCard top-up: 5% fee — avoid this if you can link your card directly

The per-transaction limit for verified foreign users is ¥35,000 (~USD $5,000), enough for hotel stays and tour packages.

If Card Linking Fails

Alipay card linking doesn't always succeed on the first try — the result can vary by card issuer. If your card is rejected:

1. Try again after 24 hours — sometimes the verification takes time to clear
2. Try a different card — if you have a second Visa or Mastercard, try that one
3. Use the Alipay TourCard — available at airport service counters in major Chinese cities. Present your passport and load cash (CNY) onto it. There's a 5% loading fee, but it works where direct card linking fails
4. Airport cash top-up — Alipay cash top-up counters are in the international arrivals halls at Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, and Hangzhou airports
