Why Baidu Translate for VPN-Free Translation
- No VPN needed: Works on any Chinese network, including hotel Wi-Fi and local SIM cards
- Fast on Chinese networks: Baidu's servers are in China, so responses are instant
- Chinese-optimized: Better at translating Chinese idioms, regional dialects, and colloquial expressions than Western translation tools
- Offline mode: Download language packs for offline translation without any internet
If you have a VPN or an Airalo eSIM, Google Translate works well in China. Baidu Translate is most useful when you're on hotel Wi-Fi without a VPN, or when your VPN is slow or disconnected.
Setting Up Baidu Translate
1. Download the app
Search 'Baidu Translate' or '百度翻译' in the App Store or Google Play. Install it. The app is free.
2. Download offline language packs
Open the app and go to Settings → Offline Translation. Download the Chinese-English language pack (about 50–100 MB). This allows translation without internet — useful in areas with poor signal.
3. Set your default language pair
The app defaults to Chinese → English. If you want to translate from English to Chinese (to show someone), tap the language selector and swap the languages.
Translating Text
By typing: Tap the text input area and type or paste Chinese text. The translation appears immediately below.
By camera: Tap the camera icon to use the live camera translator. Point at Chinese text and Baidu overlays the translation in real time.
By voice: Tap the microphone icon and speak in English. Baidu translates your speech to Chinese text — useful for showing someone what you want to say.
By photo: Tap the camera icon, then tap the photo icon to take a picture of text. Baidu extracts and translates all text in the image.
1. Open Baidu Translate and select the language pair
Open the app. The top bar shows the source and target languages (e.g. Chinese → English). Tap either language to change it.
2. Enter or paste the text to translate
Tap the text area and type or paste the Chinese text you want to translate. The translation appears automatically as you type.
3. Copy or share the translation
Tap the translation to copy it. You can also tap the speaker icon to hear the translation spoken aloud — useful for pronunciation.
For translating menus or signs, use the camera mode. Tap the camera icon, point at the text, and tap any word to see its translation. This works offline if you've downloaded the language pack.
Practical Tips
- Download offline packs before your trip: Go to Settings → Offline Translation and download Chinese-English before you arrive. This ensures translation works even without internet.
- Bidirectional translation: Baidu translates both Chinese → English and English → Chinese. Use English → Chinese to type what you want to say and show it to someone.
- Voice input: The voice translation feature works well for short phrases. Speak clearly and slowly for best results.
- Compared to Google Translate: Baidu is better for Chinese-specific content (menus, signs, local expressions). Google Translate is better for translating longer documents or content from other languages.
- WeChat integration: Baidu Translate can be accessed as a mini-program within WeChat — useful if you receive a Chinese message and want to translate it without switching apps.
