How to Use Baidu Translate's Camera on Hotel Wi-Fi
Last updated: 2026-04-30
Hotel Wi-Fi in China is on a Chinese network, which means Google Translate's camera can be slow or unreliable without a VPN. ![]()
When to Use Baidu Translate's Camera
- Hotel check-in forms: Registration forms are often in Chinese only
- Room service menus: Chinese-only menus in your room
- Hotel notices: Safety instructions, checkout procedures, facility information
- Restaurant menus near your hotel: Local restaurants rarely have English menus
- Signs and notices: Anywhere you encounter Chinese text without internet access
If you have a VPN running, Google Translate's camera works well too. Use Baidu Translate's camera when you're on hotel Wi-Fi without a VPN, or when you want faster results on Chinese networks.
Using the Live Camera Translator
1. Open Baidu Translate and tap the camera icon
Open the app. On the main screen, tap the camera icon (相机). This opens the live camera view.
2. Point at the Chinese text
Hold your phone over the text you want to translate. Baidu highlights recognized Chinese characters with colored overlays. The translation appears at the bottom of the screen in real time.
3. Tap a word for more detail
Tap any highlighted word to see its full dictionary entry — the character, pinyin pronunciation, and definition. This is useful when you want to understand a specific term rather than just the overall meaning.
4. Take a photo for a cleaner read
For longer text (a full menu page, a notice), tap the shutter button to take a photo. Baidu processes the image and extracts all text. You can then tap any word for its translation.
Translating Hotel Check-In Forms
Hotel registration forms in China require your passport details. The form is usually in Chinese. Here's what the common fields mean:
- 姓名 (xìngmíng): Full name
- 护照号码 (hùzhào hàomǎ): Passport number
- 国籍 (guójí): Nationality
- 入住日期 (rùzhù rìqī): Check-in date
- 离店日期 (lí diàn rìqī): Check-out date
- 联系电话 (liánxì diànhuà): Contact phone number
- 签名 (qiānmíng): Signature
Most hotel staff at international hotels speak enough English to help with check-in. The camera translator is most useful for smaller local hotels where staff may not speak English.
Reading Room Service Menus
Room service menus in Chinese hotels often have no English. Use the camera to:
- Photograph the full menu page
- Tap each dish name to see the translation
- Note the dish number (菜品编号) — you can order by number over the phone
Common room service items:
- 早餐 (zǎocān): Breakfast
- 粥 (zhōu): Congee/rice porridge
- 面条 (miàntiáo): Noodles
- 炒饭 (chǎofàn): Fried rice
- 三明治 (sānmíngzhì): Sandwich
Practical Tips
- Download offline packs: Go to Settings → Offline Translation and download the Chinese-English pack. The camera translator works offline once the pack is downloaded — useful in rooms with poor Wi-Fi.
- Good lighting: The camera works best in good light. Turn on the room lights or use your phone's flashlight for dark menus.
- Printed vs. handwritten: The camera handles printed text well. Handwritten text (like a handwritten menu on a chalkboard) is harder — try the handwriting input mode instead.
- Screenshot and translate: If you receive a photo of Chinese text (e.g. a WeChat message with a photo), screenshot it and use the photo translation mode in Baidu Translate.
