Zhangjiajie Airport to the City and Wulingyuan: Every Transfer Option

The easiest ride from Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (DYG) to downtown is the free airport shuttle bus — show your same-day boarding pass and pay nothing. The cheapest is city bus No. 4 at ¥2. A taxi to downtown costs ¥20–40 and takes about 15 minutes. If you're heading straight to Wulingyuan (the "Avatar mountains" Scenic Area), that's 35 km away: budget ¥100–160 for a taxi or about an hour, or combine local buses for under ¥20. Option 1: Free Airport Shuttle Bus
The airport runs an official shuttle (机场大巴) from the terminal to central downtown — free for arriving passengers.
- Who can ride: anyone with a boarding pass or e-ticket for a flight landing that day. Have it ready to show the driver.
- Where to board: outside the ground-floor (1F) arrival hall exit. Follow signs for 机场大巴 (Airport Shuttle Bus).
- Stops: Post Office Building (邮政大厦) in the city center, then Zhangjiajie International Hotel (张家界国际大酒店).
- Schedule: no fixed timetable — buses leave roughly 30–40 minutes after each arriving flight, running from the first morning arrivals until the last evening flights land (around midnight).
The shuttle only serves downtown. For the Tianmen Mountain cableway station or the railway stations, get off downtown and continue by taxi or bus No. 4.
Option 2: City Bus No. 4 (¥2)
Public bus No. 4 is a loop line linking the airport with downtown and the Tianmen Mountain cableway station — the cheapest option if you're not in a hurry.
- Where to board: exit the terminal, cross the parking plaza, and walk to the Hehua Airport stop (荷花机场路口站) on the main road.
- Key stops: downtown business district, Tianmen Mountain Cableway lower station, Zhangjiajie Central Railway Station / Central Bus Station.
- Hours: roughly 06:30–20:30 daily, every 10–15 minutes.
- Fare: flat ¥2. Drop exact cash into the fare box — drivers give no change — or scan the transit QR code in Alipay or WeChat.
Option 3: Taxi
Official taxis queue directly outside the arrival hall doors. This is the most convenient door-to-door option, but you need to watch the meter.
- Meter rates: ¥6 base for the first 1.6 km, then ¥2/km up to 10 km and ¥3/km beyond. From 22:00 to 06:00 the base rises to ¥7 and per-km rates go up about 20%.
- Typical fares: ¥20–40 to downtown, ¥15–20 to the Tianmen Mountain cableway, ¥25–35 to West Railway Station, ¥100–160 to Wulingyuan.
- Insist on the meter. Some airport drivers quote flat prices instead — say "Dǎ biǎo, xièxie" (打表，谢谢 — "use the meter, please") or agree on a firm price before getting in.
Ignore touts inside the arrival hall offering rides, hotels, or "discounted" park tours. Walk straight past them to the official taxi queue, the shuttle stop, or the ride-hailing pickup zone outside.
Option 4: Didi and Pre-Booked Private Transfers
Didi ride-hailing
Didi gives you an upfront price and removes the language barrier — you can also use the Didi mini program inside WeChat or Alipay without installing a separate app.
- Pickup point: the ride-hailing zone inside parking lot P1, a short walk past the taxi bay.
- Cost: about ¥18–25 to downtown Yongding, usually a few yuan below taxi meter fares.
Pre-booked private transfer
A driver waits in the arrival hall with your name sign — book through your hotel or an international platform before you fly.
- Cost: roughly ¥90–120 for a sedan to downtown; ¥180–250 for a van to Wulingyuan.
- Worth it for: late-night arrivals, families with lots of luggage, or groups of 3–4 heading straight to Wulingyuan (splitting a van often beats two taxis).
Getting to Wulingyuan (Zhangjiajie National Forest Park)
Most visitors stay in Wulingyuan Town next to the park, 35 km from the airport. There's no direct public bus from the airport, so you have two realistic choices:
Fast: taxi or Didi direct, ¥100–160, 40–60 minutes depending on traffic.
Cheap (about ¥14, 1.5–2 hours):
1. Airport to Central Bus Station
Take bus No. 4 (¥2) or a taxi (¥15–25) to Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station (中心汽车站), next to the central railway station downtown.
2. Tourist bus to Wulingyuan
Buses to Wulingyuan (武陵源) leave from the same station roughly every 20–30 minutes through the day, about ¥12, 50–60 minutes. Service winds down in the early evening — don't count on it after ~19:00.
3. Arrive in Wulingyuan Town
The bus drops you in Wulingyuan Town, walking distance or a short taxi ride from most hotels and the park's east entrance.
The Grand Canyon and Glass Bridge are a further 30–40 km east of Wulingyuan — go there as a day trip from Wulingyuan rather than straight from the airport.
Arriving Late at Night
- The free shuttle runs until the last evening flights (around midnight), so it often still works for late arrivals heading downtown.
- Taxis are always available after landing; expect the 22:00–06:00 night surcharge (about 20% higher).
- Didi availability thins out late — wait times grow and surge pricing may apply.
- Going straight to Wulingyuan at night: the tourist bus has stopped by then, so your only options are a taxi (¥100–160 plus night surcharge) or a pre-booked transfer. If your flight lands after ~22:00 and your hotel is in Wulingyuan, booking the transfer in advance is the reliable choice.
Practical Tips
- Set up payments before you land. Link your Visa or Mastercard to Alipay and WeChat — taxis, buses, and shops here run on QR-code payments, and the bus fare box takes exact cash only.
- Carry your hotel address in Chinese characters. Drivers rarely read English or pinyin; screenshot the Chinese name and address of your hotel and show it.
- Keep small notes (¥5/¥10/¥20) for the bus and small purchases.
- SIM cards and ATMs: telecom counters selling tourist SIMs and ATMs accepting international cards are in the 1F arrival hall; free airport Wi-Fi covers the terminal.
- Luggage storage is available on 2F near check-in (¥10–30 per piece per day) if you're stopping in the city before an evening departure.
