How to Order Food Delivery via Alipay
Last updated: 2026-04-30
Food delivery in China is fast, cheap, and covers everything from hotpot to KFC. The catch for foreigners is that the standalone Meituan and Ele.me apps require a Chinese phone number to register. The workaround: use the Meituan mini-program inside Alipay, which reuses your existing Alipay account and accepts payment through your linked Visa or Mastercard.
How to Order via the Alipay Mini-Program
1. Open Meituan inside Alipay
On the Alipay home screen, use the search bar at the top and type 'Meituan' (美团). Tap the Meituan mini-program that appears. This opens Meituan's delivery service directly inside Alipay — no separate account needed.
2. Enable translation
Tap the three-dot menu (⋯) in the top right corner and select Translate (翻译). The interface switches to English. Alternatively, browse by photos — dish pictures appear prominently and tell you most of what you need to know.
3. Set your delivery address
Tap the address bar at the top. Enter your hotel's Chinese address — copy it from your hotel booking confirmation or ask reception to write it down for you. Paste it into the address field. Getting the address right in Chinese characters is essential; delivery riders cannot read English addresses.
4. Choose your food and add to cart
Browse by restaurant category or scroll the feed. Tap dishes to add them to your order. Look for the green checkmarks on dishes that indicate popular choices. You can add delivery notes — common ones: 不要辣 (no spice), 少辣 (mild spice), 放门口 (leave at door).
5. Pay with Alipay
Tap Checkout. Alipay handles payment automatically using your linked Visa or Mastercard — no additional steps needed. Confirm the order and you'll see an estimated delivery time, usually 30–45 minutes.
Delivery Address Tips
The most common failure point is the delivery address. Riders navigate by GPS and Chinese characters — an English address means the food doesn't arrive.
- Get it from your hotel: Ask reception to write the hotel's full Chinese address on a piece of paper or send it to you on WeChat
- Copy from your booking: Booking.com and Agoda usually show the hotel address in Chinese on the booking page
- Room number: Add your room number in the delivery notes field — write it as a number (e.g. 房间1234 or Room 1234)
- Phone number: If you have a local SIM or WhatsApp-only, add reception's number as the contact. Most riders won't call for small orders
Add the note 放前台,不用电话 (Leave at reception, no need to call) to avoid getting a call from the rider when you're in the shower. The food will be waiting at the front desk.
What You Can Order
Meituan isn't just Chinese food. You can order:
- Western food (pizza, burgers, sandwiches)
- KFC, McDonald's, Starbucks, and other chains
- Hotpot broth kits and ingredients for in-room cooking
- Breakfast congee and dim sum
- Groceries, fruit, and convenience items
- Medicine and toiletries from pharmacies
Delivery typically costs ¥3–8 and takes 30–45 minutes. Most restaurants deliver until midnight; some 24-hour options exist.
Practical Tips
- Peak hours slow things down: 11:30am–1:00pm and 5:30–7:30pm see longer wait times. Order slightly before or after peak for faster service.
- Weather delays: Rain and extreme heat slow delivery significantly. Add buffer time.
- No tipping expected: Delivery riders are compensated through the platform fee. Tipping is not a custom in China — you don't need to add anything extra.
- Track in real time: Once your order is placed, you can track the rider's location live on the map inside the Alipay mini-program.
