How to Translate Menus and Signs with Google Translate Camera

Last updated: 2026-04-30

Most restaurants in China have menus entirely in Chinese with no English translation.

Google Translate
View Guide →'s camera mode solves this: point your phone at the menu and the Chinese characters are replaced with English text in real time. No typing, no copying — just point and read.

Using Camera Translation (Instant Mode)

  1. 1. Open Google Translate and tap the camera icon

On the Google Translate home screen, tap the camera icon below the text input field. This opens the camera translation mode.

  2. 2. Select Chinese (Simplified) as the source language

At the top of the camera screen, set the source language to 'Chinese (Simplified)' — this is the standard written Chinese used in mainland China. The target language should be your language (e.g. English).

  3. 3. Point at the text

Point your camera at the menu, sign, or any Chinese text. Google Translate overlays English translations directly on the image in real time. The original Chinese text is replaced with English on your screen.

  4. 4. Tap to freeze the image

Tap the shutter button to freeze the frame. This makes it easier to read the translation without holding the camera steady. Tap again to resume live mode.

For better results, ensure good lighting. Dark restaurant lighting can make character recognition less accurate. Use your phone's flashlight if needed — tap the flash icon in the camera mode.

Using Photo Mode for Saved Images

If you've already taken a photo of a menu or sign:

  1. Open Google Translate → tap the camera icon
  2. Tap the photo gallery icon (bottom left of the camera screen)
  3. Select the photo from your gallery
  4. Google Translate analyzes the image and overlays translations

This works for screenshots too — useful if someone sends you a Chinese menu or sign via WeChat.

What Camera Translation Works Well For

  • Restaurant menus: Dish names, ingredients, prices
  • Street signs and shop names
  • Product labels and packaging
  • Hotel notices and instructions
  • Museum exhibit descriptions

What It Struggles With

  • Handwritten text: Cursive or informal handwriting is harder to recognize
  • Stylized fonts: Decorative or artistic Chinese fonts may not be recognized
  • Very small text: Text smaller than about 10pt in the image
  • Vertical text: Some traditional Chinese text is written vertically — rotate your phone if needed

Camera translation works offline if you've downloaded the Chinese language pack. Go to Google Translate → Settings → Offline Translation → Download Chinese (Simplified). The offline pack is about 50 MB and enables camera translation without internet.

Practical Tips

  • Scan before ordering: Take a moment to scan the full menu before the server comes. This gives you time to read without pressure.
  • Allergen check: Camera translate ingredient lists on packaged food to check for allergens.
  • Save translations: Tap the share icon after freezing a translated image to save it to your photos.
  • Traditional Chinese: If you're in a restaurant with traditional Chinese characters (less common in mainland China, more common in Hong Kong-style restaurants), switch the source language to "Chinese (Traditional)."
